Last class we did an activity to compare three different approaches in second language teaching.
1. Grammar Translation
• Emphasizes reading, writing ans translation
• Conscious learnig of gramatical rules
• Memorization
• Class time talking about the language
• Memorization of paradigms, patterns and vocabulary
2. Direct Method
• Alternative to grammar translation
• Adults learn as children (they believe)
• Teacher tries to create a natural learning enviroment
• Major emphasis on communicating
• Classes only in second language
• No translation
• Language is acquired trhough questions and answers and dialogs.
3. Audiolingual
• Represents a return to the direct method
• Students are conditionated to respond correctly to oral and written stimuli
• They are required to respond imediatly to a mode utterance
• Language learning is viewed as a mechanical mimicry
• Dialogue memorization and pattern drills
• Is rarely used today
